RIBICH & LUBOVICH WIN WALLEYE CLASSIC

The team of Gregory Ribich and Bob Lubovich were the big winners Saturday on Lake Vermilion, winning $10,000 at the 8th annual City Auto Glass Walleye Classic, presented by American Family Insurance.

Ribich, of Minneapolis, and Lubovich, from Lakeville, finished with a total catch of 12.52 pounds with their 6-fish limit, including a 6.26 pound walleye, the only walleye weighed during the tournament that went larger than 26-inches. This gave the pair big fish money as well.

Finishing in 2nd place were Dave Beckmann of Crane Lake and Zachary Beckmann of Duluth with a catch of 9.89 pounds. 3rd place went to David Zasadni of Gilbert and Alan Kangas of Eveleth, who finished with 9.68 pounds. Coming in 4th were Zach Dagel from Coleraine and Jim Trombley of Deer River, while Russ Dahl and Gary Savela from Mt. Iron completed the Top 5.

83 teams registered to fish this year’s event, despite conditions that left parts of Vermilion covered with ice until the morning before the tournament. UMD Bulldogs men’s hockey coach Scott Sandelin and assistant Jason Herter fished, while Bulldogs football captain Tom Olson lead a group of players handling boat landings.

All proceeds from this non-profit event produced by The CAG Foundation go towards merit-based college scholarships for area students. Volunteer help was provided by the Kiwanis Club.

City Auto Glass is the largest independently-owned auto glass company in Minnesota, serving customers with mobile glass service throughout the state.

Next year’s tournament will be held in mid-May on Lake Vermilion.
